ENERGY and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor has announced the opening of a new Alstom workshop in Morwell.

The Morwell workshop will offer a full range of repair and maintenance services to Latrobe Valley industry, including machining, steel fabrication, specialised welding and fitting services.

Batchelor says the facility will create 28 new jobs. He claims Alstom’s decision to open a new workshop shows that businesses understand the region will continue to have a strong economic future despite the challenges of moving towards a carbon-constrained future.

There are 100 Alstom staff already working in the Latrobe Valley, providing field services support to Hazelwood power station since 1997.

Batchelor says it the workshop is an exciting addition to the region, especially considering Alstom’s global focus on developing technology that substantially improved the energy efficiency of coal-fired power plants.
