Protesters chain themselves to coal dredger in VIC

SEVEN Greenpeace protesters chained themselves to a coal dredger at the Hazelwood power station and mine.

The protesters claimed the facility was an example of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's failure to tackle climate change. They were attempting to stop coal production by attaching themselves to the mine vehicle with chains and padlocks.

However, a spokesman for the mine's owner International Power said the machine had not been in use and the mine's coal supply had not been disrupted.

The five women and two men were charged with trespassing and bailed on the condition they do not return to Hazelwood coal mine.
